Simple Ways to Prevent Accidents While Kids Enjoy the Outdoors

Summer is a time for freedom, fun, and outdoor adventure—especially for kids. From riding bikes through the neighborhood to playing in the street with friends, longer days mean more opportunities to explore. But with that freedom also comes an increased risk of accidents.

At White Rock Medical Center, we see a seasonal rise in injuries during the summer months, many of which are preventable. Here’s how you can help keep your kids safe while still letting them enjoy everything summer has to offer.

🚲 Bike Safety Starts with the Basics

Bike riding is one of the most common summer activities—and also one of the most common sources of injury.

What parents can do:

  • Always require a properly fitted helmet
  • Teach kids to follow traffic rules (yes—even in neighborhoods)
  • Make sure bikes are the right size and in good condition
  • Encourage riding in well-lit, low-traffic areas

Even a quick ride can turn serious without proper precautions.

🚗 Watch for Street & Driveway Dangers

Kids are more likely to be outside playing, which increases the risk of accidents involving cars.

Stay mindful of:

  • Cars backing out of driveways
  • Limited visibility between parked cars
  • Kids darting into the street unexpectedly

Tips:

  • Remind kids to look both ways—even when playing
  • Set clear boundaries for where they can play
  • Supervise younger children whenever possible

🛴 Scooters, Skates & Playground Safety

Falls from scooters, skateboards, and playground equipment are another leading cause of summer injuries.

Help reduce risk by:

  • Using protective gear (helmets, knee/elbow pads)
  • Avoiding uneven or cracked surfaces
  • Checking playground equipment for safety

☀️ Heat & Dehydration Are Real Risks

Texas summers can be intense, and kids often don’t realize when they’re overheating.

Watch for signs like:

  • Fatigue or dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Nausea

Prevention tips:

  • Encourage frequent water breaks
  • Schedule outdoor play earlier or later in the day
  • Apply sunscreen regularly
