Who is at risk?
Left untreated, wounds that don’t heal place you at risk of for complications, serious infection and could result in hospitalization or even amputation.
People with diseases that impact nerve and circulation function, such as diabetes, peripheral artery disease or heart disease, can have a higher risk of non-healing wounds. Other factors such as age, type of wound and nutrition and hydration impact a wound’s healing.
Practicing self-care and seeking expert medical care when needed are critical to lowering the risks.
Self-care
Regularly examine the feet and body to check for wounds. If you or a loved one has a non-healing wound, don’t put off getting help. Seek medical care right away to treat the wound and help reduce the risk of infections and other serious complications.
