Pam’s Weight-Loss Story: The Athlete Returns

“I had a major wake-up call one day when I stepped on the scale and saw I was 267 pounds. I knew right then that I didn’t look good and I didn’t feel good. Emotionally, I needed to do something.”

Pam always thought she carried her weight well, especially because her friends would tell her she wasn’t that big. It wasn’t until Pam decided to step on the scale that she knew she needed to take control of her weight.

“I got on the scale one day and saw that I was 267 pounds. That’s almost 300 pounds! It woke me up to where I knew no matter what anybody was saying about how I looked, I didn’t feel good. I didn’t look good. And emotionally, I knew I needed to do something.”

That’s when Pam decided to go to My New Beginning at White Rock Medical Center. Thankfully, it was just the solution she was looking for.

“The minute I walked in the door, I felt so comfortable because I knew they understood what I wanted and they were going to help me achieve it.”

And achieve it, she did. Since her gastric bypass operation in December 2012, Pam has lost 130 pounds and has gone from a size 20 Women’s to a size 8 Misses. And that was all it took to give her love of shopping and fashion, a whole new meaning. Not because of how the transformation has made her look, but because of the newly found confidence she’s gained since her weight loss.

“When I would go to the mall before surgery, you know how you see your reflection in the mall windows? I used to just cringe and kind of turn my back and not even look. Now, I face those mirrors face-on. I’m like, that’s me!”

Before her weight-loss surgery, Pam had tried every option under the sun to lose weight. No matter how hard she tried, the weight just kept coming back — and it was having detrimental effects on her health and energy levels.

“I was taking injections in my knees for arthritis, I was on high-blood pressure medicine, I was on acid reflux medicine. I mean, you name it, I was on it.“

But now, since her weight-loss surgery, she can proudly say she’s healthier than ever.

“As of right now, I take nothing but vitamins. I’m off every bit of prescription drugs, and I just have more energy. I can’t explain what it feels like to have more energy to do things and to get through your day without just going home and crashing.“

Besides her own dedication and hard work, Pam credits much of her successful weight-loss journey to the staff at White Rock Medical Center. Their support from day one gave her the strength she needed to make this transformation possible.

“They would talk to me and give me lots of hope, helping me realize I was making the right move for my life. The staff doesn’t just do the surgery and leave you. They do the surgery, and they’re with you every step of the way. And if you need them two years down the road, they’re there!”

In fact, Pam left White Rock Medical Center with a pep in her step that hadn’t been there before.

“When I walked out of there, for once in my life I thought, I got this. I can do this. And so, it was just a transformation for me.”

Now 130 pounds lighter, Pam is enjoying life to the fullest. But the best part of Pam’s journey?

“It changed my life emotionally, because even though people told me I didn’t look as big as I was, I knew deep down inside I was. I knew I needed help. And I love me now. I really do. I love me now!”
